The commander of Iraq’s popular mobilization forces, Hadi al-Ameri, says the city of Fallujah is days away from being fully cleared from Daesh militants. Ameri, who is also the head of the Badr Organization, an Iraqi political party, made the announcement on Saturday.
He added that two neighborhoods of Muaalimeen and Shuhadaa had been purged from extremists, and that only a handful of Daeshis remain in the city's northern and western neighborhoods.
The Popular Mobilization Units, allied with the Iraqi army, have been an efficient force in attempts to take back areas from the militant group. Earlier in the month, Iraqi forces raised the national flag on the main government complex in Fallujah after a weeks-long offensive.
Ameri also noted that after Fallujah was fully cleared, the forces would join the operations to liberate Mosul.
Mosul fell into the hands of Daesh fighters in June 2014 when they began their offensive in Iraq.
Abadi has promised that the liberation of Mosul will be very close as it is the "next destination" of the army in its campaign to flush the militants out of the country.
The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by gruesome violence since Daesh militants mounted an offensive in the country in June 2014.
