N. Kannan (27) and a teenager from Kurinji Nagar, Vilacheri, Madurai, were arrested here on Saturday in connection with a murder case.

A man who went missing some days ago was suspected to be murdered. Sources said that jewellery trader S. Gopal (46) of Teppakulam in Madurai was lured by a gang on the pretext of procuring gold in Thoothukudi.

But, later, he was abducted and murdered.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis told The Hindu that a cell phone used by Gopal was found near a shop in Thoothukudi a few days ago. A call received from a woman on the phone said Gopal did not reach his house and had gone missing.

Thoothukudi North police registered a ‘man missing’ case on June 16 based on a complaint lodged by S. Senthilkumar (45), a relative of Gopal.

Investigation revealed that he was murdered near Aruppukottai and the body burnt. A charred body found in a well at an isolated place in Aruppukottai was retrieved. The SP said that the ‘man missing’ case would be shifted to Aruppukottai police and converted into a case of murder.
