An employee with a footwear export company has been arrested for fabricating a story about how some men in a car robbed him of Rs. 30 lakh cash in front of the Patiala House courts on Wednesday.

The New Delhi district police, who analysed CCTV footage and call records of the man, questioned him before concluding that he had been lying. On Saturday, the police arrested Amit Sharma after he finally confessed to the crime.

“We have recovered the entire Rs. 30 lakh misappropriated by Mr. Sharma,” said Jatin Narwal, DCP (New Delhi).

Sharma had been working as an assistant with Jute Wonders Unlimited, a footwear export company based in South Delhi’s New Friends Colony. His primary responsibility was collecting and transferring cash for his employer Pradeep Modi.

On Wednesday, Sharma came to Sagar Apartments on Tilak Marg to collect Rs. 30 lakh in cash. He put the money in his backpack and headed towards New Friends Colony.

In his statement before the police, he said that he was riding past the Patiala House courts when some people in a Maruti Swift intercepted him and forcefully took away his cash-laden bag.

Sharma claimed that he chased the car until the C-Hexagon of the India Gate before the alleged robbers got away. He then called his owner, who informed the police.

What caught the investigators’ eye were inconsistencies in Sharma’s statements.

When they tried to question him about those loopholes, he did not cooperate. Instead, he remained adamant that he was robbed.

The police then checked CCTV footage available near the alleged crime spot, as well as Sharma’s call records. These were matched with the chronology of events narrated by Sharma.

“The difference between his claims and the evidence established that he was lying,” said Mr. Narwal.
