Late on Friday night, in a reality check by TOI, it was found that a truck driver speeding excessively in the middle of the city had no difficulty crossing over the boundary of Lucknow district.
TOI chased the truck all the way through from
Sarvodayanagar till it left the jurisdiction of Lucknow and kept calling the police control room about its location.
Having covered a distance of 28km in less than 40 minutes, the truck entered Unnao district without any difficulty. It crossed four checkpoints and the compound wall of a police station in the period. Apart from those in a jeep, bike-borne policemen were present at the checkpoints but did nothing to stop the heavy vehicle.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of
Ghazipur police station. The truck (UP 40 T 4449) took
Nishatganj flyover to reach GPO crossing in
Hazratganj and turned towards
Jail Road from KKC. From
Old Jail Road in
Alambagh, the driver crossed
Awadh Hospital crossing and took the high-speed
Para bypass road. After covering a distance of 10km and having passed Para police station, the truck driver took
Mohan Road to enter Unnao.
At Sarosa Bharosa village in Para, two police constables stopped the truck but they allowed it to go without checking its registration papers or what was being ferried. The back portion of the truck was kept covered.
Additional superintendent of police control room, Durgesh Kumar, said that he would check what followed after receiving the first distress call. "I will inquire into the matter," said Kumar.
