‘Whitey’ Bulger’s rat-shaped mug sold at auction for $3,600
The rat-shaped mug that once belonged to convicted mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger sold for $3,600 at a court-ordered auction on Saturday. The starting price for the mug, which Bulger used as a pencil holder, was $20.
People bid online and in person at the Boston Convention Center for hundreds of items found inside the Santa Monica apartment that Bulger shared with his girlfriend Catherine Grieg while he was on the run. Proceeds from the auction will go to the families of Bulger’s victims.
Bulger’s belongings ranged from a boxing mannequin with a hat, which sold for $4,900, to a pair of brand new sneakers that went for $55.

In addition to proceeds from the auction, each of the families will receive a little over $39,000 from the more than $800,000 seized from gangster’s apartment when he was captured five years ago, according to the Globe.
Bulger, 86, is now serving a life sentence for participating in 11 murders.
