Ludhiana: Councillors strongly opposed inauguration of developmental works by halqa in-charges during the general house meeting on Friday.
Thereafter, the house decided that no official should go with halqa in-charges to inaugurate any developmental works with the name of the in-charge on the inaugural stone.
Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria said he had a talk with the special principal secretary to deputy chief minister Rahul Tiwari, who was in the city a few days ago.
Tiwari said Halqa in-charges cannot put their name on the inaugural stone.
Earlier, councillors of the Congress and Simarjit Singh Bains group also strongly opposed inauguration of developmental works by Halqa in-charges. Bains group councillor Parminder Singh Soma asked the mayor to resign if he cannot assure respect of councillors in the house. He was riled at leaders who lost in the elections inaugurating development works.
Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria said if any official, including the MC commissioner, attends the inuaguration of any developmental work by any halqa in-charge with his name on the inaugural stone, action will be taken against them.
There has been no love lost between the opposition and halqa in-charges in the city. But authorities and representatives of the ruling party have failed to come up with a solution. There have been protests with halqa in-charges and opposition councillors coming face to face for the inauguration of developmental work.
In May, a few SAD-BJP councillors took a stand against halqa in-charges.
