First Snehaveedu ready for residents

Kudumbashree project builds home for rural poor

KOZHIKODE: Kudumbashree has added one more feather to its cap with a housing project for the rural poor. The scheme to provide a roof for the deprived women in the district is being carried out with the help of Snehanidhi funds raised by the members of Kudumbashree.

Minister for Local Administration Dr K.T. Jaleel will inaugurate the first Snehaveedu constructed at Kunnamangalam on Saturday. The project will provide houses for 37 needy people across the district. Each house will have a space of 550 to 600 square feet, costing between Rs 5 lakh and 6 Lakh.

“We will spend around Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per house in addition to the funds collected from other sources. The local communities are coming forward with their contributions in work hours,” said the coordinator of district mission, T.P.
Muhammed Basheer.

The Snehanidhi project works on contributions ranging from Rs 1 to Rs 10 from each member of the community development societies (CDSs). “It is with the small contributions made by each member of Kudumbashree that we were able to introduce such a big project for the needy,” he further said.

“When we launched the programme at Kunnamangalam by laying the foundation stone, we got excess raw materials as donations. Then we thought of a programme to take it forward. We called a meeting of CDS chairpersons and discussed it and everyone was positive. More than the money spent, what makes this programme unique is the active participation of ordinary workers,” he said.

The Community Development Society of Kudumbashree units, including that of Azhiyur, Koothali, Mepayyur, Perambra, Olavanna, Chathamangalam, Nanmanda, Kakoor, Koyilandy, Pavangad, Kurachund, Balussery, Ulliyeri, Thiruvambadi, Perumanna, Madavoor, Kozhikode North and South, contributed for the Snehanidhi project.
