Mahe mill closure to hit 500 workers

NITI Aayog has listed Cannanore Spinning and Weaving Mill, Mahe as organisations running without profit.

MAHE: The NITI Aayog’s recommendation to close Cannanore Spinning and Weaving Mill, Mahe is causing concern among the employees. The Mill, which comes under the National Textile Corporation, is providing jobs to nearly 500 persons, both full time and part time.

It is learnt that the Aayog has included the Mill as one of the oragnisations which are running without a profit. However, the employees say that the Mill, which was in a bad shape years back, has come back to a good position after the union government’s aid.

“The Mill is successfully running after we received '32 crore from the Union Government when I was the Home Minister of Puducherry. There should be an investigation if the Mill is in a bad condition. At any cost we should not allow the Mill to close,” said Congress leader E. Valsaraj.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mahe MLA Dr Ramachandran said that there was no need to worry at present. “It is a fact that the recommendation exists. However, the union government has yet to take a decision and I hope before that, we can amicably solve the issue,” he said. The Spinning Mill was taken over by the government in 1963.
