Mandya Taluk Panchayat (TP) members have urged the State government to open English-medium lower primary schools in the district to provide qualitative education to students from the rural areas.

At the general body meeting of the TP here on Friday, they expressed concern over the poor enrolment at government schools for the current academic year.

The government should initiate measures to provide education in the English medium at government schools, apart from starting English medium lower primary schools in rural areas, they demanded.

Better infrastructure

The newly elected members also stressed the need to improve infrastructure at government educational institutions.

Nagarathna, one of the members, said that many government schools in the district do not provide qualitative education. “The State government has been releasing grants for the education sector. However, the quality of education remains poor. The Education Department should initiate measures to provide qualitative education and also to attract more children to enrol in government schools,” she said.

Rekha, vice-president, urged Executive Officer Basavaraju to write a letter to the State government to demand the setting up of English-medium government schools in the district.

Meanwhile, some members demanded action against the anganwadi workers who have neglected doing a proper job at anganwadi centres.

Naganna, R.L. Prakash and some other members took part in the discussions. Beerappa, president, Mandya TP, chaired the meeting.
