Seven huts were gutted in a fire mishap owing to suspected electrical short-circuit in Kisan Nagar in Kurnool city in the early hours of Friday. However, there were no casualties.
Fire broke out in the house of a labour contractor Yesanna, when the inmates were asleep and spread to the adjoining hut of a private transport company employee Mallikarjuna.
When smoke emanated, the residents of the two huts ran out for safety. Five more huts which were unoccupied were also reduced to ashes.
On being alerted, three fire tenders rushed and put off the flames.
All the household goods, clothes and utensils, two television sets and an almirah were reduced to ashes. Mr. Yesanna lamented that Rs. 18,000 was burnt in his hut. Several cotton beds stored in a hut by the land owner G. Arun Kumar were also burnt.
Houses for victims sought
YSR Congress MLA of Panyam Gouru Charitha Reddy and her husband and YSRC district president Gouru Venkata Reddy inspected the huts, enquired with the victims about the fire and gave an assistance of Rs. 5,000 each to the two affected families. YSRC 14th ward in charge Maheswar Reddy gave an aid of Rs. 1,000 each to the two families. Ms. Charitha Reddy spoke to Kallur tahsildar Veeranna and urged him to extend immediate relief to the two affected families and recommend grant of Indira Awas Yojana houses to them.
