JUN 24, 2016 LISTEN

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Mr. Ebenezer Asante Twum is very optimistic that the newly launched fastest technology – 4G LTE has what it takes to change the telecommunication landscape in Ghana for good.

Speaking to journalists at the official launch of the 4G LTE at the MTN House located on the Independence Avenue road in Accra on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 Mr. Asante said “MTN is launching its 4G LTE service, a technology that will potentially change the telecommunication landscape of Ghana for good.”

“MTN is the first and only 4G service that enables users to experience higher-speed mobile internet on the same mobile phone from which they make and receive calls. It is also the only 4G service available in all regional capitals and key towns in Ghana,” Mr. Asante added.

The 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a wireless communications standard that is designed to provide up to 10 times the speeds of 3G networks for mobile devices such as notebooks, smart phones, notebooks, tablets, and wireless hotspots.

Mr. Ebenezer Asante further reiterated the extent to which the 4G technology can positively impact growth and development in Ghana.

“With faster internet, the transmission of data in the form of text, images or video/TV can be done with ease, on-the-go, with the best speed. Higher speed internet broadband promotes business and enriched social lives, ultimately boosting national development,” he noted.

Done in a unique fashion, the 4G LTE launch received a worldwide attention as it was streamed live via YouTube using MTN 4G-SIM-enabled drones.

MTN customers can access 4G LTE on their mobile phones as well as other mobile devices such as routers, mifi devices and dongles. To enjoy this new experience, subscribers should visit any MTN service center with a valid ID to have their SIM cards swapped for a 4G LTE SIM.

Again, subscribers can check their phone’s compatibility by simply dialing *585# and following the prompts.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) granted MTN the 4G frequency spectrum (800 MHz) Band in December 2015.

Over 400 MTN 4G sites were operational as of Tuesday in regional capitals and key towns such as Agona Swedru, Obuasi, and Tarkwa with an additional 30 soon to be operationalized.

MTN is investing $18 million in the deployment of a total of 475 4G LTE site in 2016.
