After some high octane and adrenaline pumping action in the MRF-MMSC Indian National Racing Championship for four-wheelers at the Kari Motor Speedway last weekend, Coimbatore is now all set to witness the big boys of supercross in action in the MRF-MoGrip FMSCI National Supercross championship at a makeshift venue near the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex here on Sunday.

The supercross championship involves off-road motorcycles in full cry in a technically demanding track measuring 750 metres.

The demanding part for the riders is to overcome 12 double jumps, a cut tabletop, one table top and whoops and berms. The track is designed in such a way that it will separate the boys from the men.

The championship said to be the biggest off-road two-wheeler event is organized by Godspeed Racing, Pune, which is spearheaded by former seven-time national motorsport champion Shyam Kothari.

Shyam has owned the organizing the championship for the past five years and he knows right what the riders and the spectators demand.

“Coimbatore has always been a motor sport hub. It has brought in the crowd for this championship in the past. I believe this time it is going to be even better,” says Shyam.

“Lots of people here are interested in motor sports and there are quite a few supercross riders from this part of the region as well,” he added.

He expects a record number of entries. “The first round in Goa saw 120-plus entries. I expect Coimbatore to surpass this number.”

Shyam says the track laid for the championship is an ideal one. “We have made it a safer track for the riders. The double jumps have soft landings. Even if a rider jumps wrong, he need not worry.”

“We have also considered safety for the spectators. Lots of people come in to watch their favourite stars. We have erected galleries for the first time for the spectators to have a better view,” he adds.

With safety and security in place couple with great weather, the championship is sure to make it mark in a bigger way.
