According to local police, the bus was on its way to Manuguru in Khammam district from Hyderabad when the driver lost control of the vehicle resulting in the bus falling into the canal nearly 20 feet below the road.

The number of victims would have been much higher had there been water in the canal, police said. The bus would have been nearly submerged if there was water and it would have been a real disaster, a local police official said.
The police also said that according to the bus driver, he lost control of the vehicle when the steering wheel rod gave away suddenly as he approached the bridge over the canal.
