Muzaffarnagar jail fight over food turns deadly, inmate beaten to death in jail

Chandrahas was the inmate who was attacked Thursday night and rushed to the hospital in serious condition where he was declared dead by the doctors this morning.

A 34-year-old murder convict serving life imprisonment at Muzaffarnagar district jail was allegedly beaten to death by inmates following an altercation over sharing the evening meal, police said Friday.

Chandrahas was attacked Thursday night and rushed to the hospital in serious condition where he was declared dead by the doctors this morning, district Jail Superintendent Rakesh Singh said.

All the other inmates created ruckus in the jail premises after hearing about Chandrahas’s death and refused to have breakfast demanding action against the group of prisoners allegedly involved in the attack.

Chandrahas belonged to Dhudhli village in the district and had been lodged in the jail since November 2006.

A co-inmate of the victim has lodged a murder complaint against four undertrials — Shahrukh, Sukha, Pradeep and Pramod but the case was yet to be registered. The jail officials claimed that the complaint would be forwarded to the police only after the exact cause of death was confirmed. The autopsy report was awaited.

Festive offer

Singh said the attack on Chandrahas was reportedly a sequel to a verbal duel between him and an undertrial Sachin over sharing of food during evening meal served to the inmates Thursday. The altercation, which occurred inside Barrack-8, turned violent as Chandrahas attacked Sachin with a fork causing injuries in latter’s left leg, he added.

Jail security staff intervened and shifted Chandrahas and his co-inmate Bittu to Barrack-3.

Bittu alleged in his complaint that as he along with Chandrahas entered Barrack-3, a group of inmates, who reportedly were close to Sachin, attacked them. They thrashed Chandrahas badly causing serious injuries.

“He was taken to the jail hospital and was later referred to Meerut, where he succumbed. Adequate police force has been deployed inside the prison premises,” said Rajendra Singh, the City Magistrate who along with the other officers rushed to the jail after getting information about the clash. The Jail Superintendent claimed that no other inmate except Bittu from Barrack-3 has spoken about the attack on Chandrahas.
