Lucknow: More than 8 lakh people in the city will benefit from sewer connections under the AMRUT scheme by March 2017. Jal Nigam has been recently sanctioned about Rs 300 crore to give sewer connections to areas like Mahanagar, Vikasnagar, Kamta, Chinhat, Kalyanpur, Janakipuram, Aliganj and Rahimnagar.
Jal Nigam had laid around 1,176 km of sewer lines between 2008 and 2012 under JNNURM but more than 50% houses had not got connectivity because of Jal Sansthan's laxity and paucity of funds.
Jal Nigam's project in charge said, "This year, we will give 1 lakh sewer connections to houses which are close to sewer trunk lines." In Old City, around 20,000 houses need to be connected in Balaganj, Daulatganj and Dubagga while in Aliganj, Rahimnagar and Janakipuram, around 50,000 houses have to be connected. In Indiranagar, Ismailganj, Takrohi and Chinhat, around 25,000 houses will get sewer connections.
The other biggest problem of the city-almost 80% houses have same exit for sludge and sewage-leading to sewage outflow often, will also be redressed under AMRUT. "Separate drainage and sewerage lines have to be made across Lucknow till 2021 under AMRUT," said an official.
