Gujarat has audience for all kinds of music
Vishal_Dadlani
Vishal Dadlani is not new to Ahmedabad as he has come to the city for a number of performances, and he admits that the audience response has been like no other. The rock star of Bollywood, who would soon be seen judging a singing reality show The Stage that is all about English and contemporary music, talks about English music in India, indie music and more. Excerpts from a chat:
You have come to Ahmedabad a number of times.
How’s been the experience?
I remember coming to Ahmedabad a long time ago, and even at that time we got an amazing response. I have performed with my band Pentagram as well as with Shekhar, my Bollywood songs, and I have got a fitting audience for both. It shows that there is good acceptance to all kinds of music, which is great.
You have been a judge on a number of music reality shows earlier as well. How’s been the experience.
It’s been great because you are not only a judge on these shows, but you are also learning all the time. The kind of contestants we see coming from across India are great teachers for us. The interaction we have with them, their musical acumen, their dedication and hard work motivates us to be better. And that’s the fun part.
The Stage is all about English music. At a time when most indie outfits are going more colloquial in their music, does English music holds good?
There’s space for all kind of music in India right now. While it is true that more indie musicians are going colloquial and folksy, English music or singing in English has its own space. And that is why I feel indie music is in such a great space as all kind of genres are co-existing and there is audience for all kind of music.
