Hundreds of European players in the English Premier League and other professional soccer leagues, whom the EU membership allowed to easily sign for teams, could now be subjected to the FA regulations with which players around the world are selected from. It is a points-based system, decided mainly by the proportion of international matches a player has been selected for.

The rules might affect star players like Eden Hazard (Belgium), David De Gea (Spain), and Mesut Ozil (Germany).

There is also a Fifa rule that prohibits buying footballers who are between 16 and 18 years and outside of EU. That would leave out a lot of other young players too.

In the 2015-16 season of the premier league more than 400 European players were registered to play. The effect on them might not be felt so soon following the vote, yet the players will not have an legal right to live and work in the UK.

According to British media reports, Premiership, is broadcast to 730 million homes in 185 countries.

“332 players in England and Scotland would be threatened by Brexit.” a BBC report said.

EPL has flourished in the previous environment. Over the previous to last season, it pulled in around $ 5 billion in revenue, which is more than Bundesliga (Germany) and La Liga (Spain) combined.
In the last season, TV rights alone brought the EPL $ 2.5 billion.

The Premier League chairman, Richard Scudamore, had shown interest to in the fact that England should stay in EU. David Beckham, credited European teammates for the innumerous wins by Manchester United.

Brexit could also have a surprise effect on England football team. The English Football Association have always wanted to introduce a quota system in its leagues, to give chances to more English players at the highest level.

It is however too early to predict what effect that might have. While the international talent raise the standard of play in the EPL, and bring with them TV money from foreign fans and sponsorship deals.

The overflowing-with-cash EPL is too big and powerful to simply disappear, but it just might lose its place at the top, out – competed by Bundesliga and La Liga as they will still have access to Europe.
