KUALA KANGSAR: Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid who won the Kuala Kangsar by-election just a few days ago, has promised to see that the needs of the area's constituents be met.Mastura, 55, who is still in 'edah' (waiting period for Muslim women to observe following death of spouse, or divorce) for four months and 10 days, is eager to begin active work as the area's new member of Parliament when the 'edah' period is over.

"I need to work hard as I don't have much time to resolve various matters that have been raised," she told reporters after visiting the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary constituency's service centre, here, today.

The mother of four is the widow of the previous Kuala Kangsar MP, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Annuar Wan Ahmad who died in a helicopter crash with five others in Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5.

Mastura has a list of things on her agenda, including visiting the site for the building of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board's (MPOB) training centre, which had been promised by her late husband who was the MPOB chairman.

On her status of still being in the 'edah' period, Mastura said she had asked for views and guidelines from Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria in carrying out her tasks.

"According to the mufti, If I am required to serve (the people), I am allowed to go out but certain things like celebrating the win is not permitted," she said.

On her visit to the service centre, Mastura said she was so moved. "This used to be my late husband's office which has now become a big responsibility for me, to chart a new journey in serving the people of Kuala Kangsar," she added.

In the Kuala Kangsar by-election on June 18, Mastura won with a 6,969-vote majority against her three challengers including from PAS and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah). – Bernama
