NEW DELHI: The main accused of the shootout incident at Karkardooma court, which took place on December 23, 2015, was arrested after cops raided his house in northeast Delhi's Bramhapuri late on Monday night. A policeman had died after being hit by three bullets in the incident.
The accused, Mohammad Jamal, is a proclaimed offender and wanted in more than 10 criminal cases, including murder, robbery, extortion and attempt to murder.
He also carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh. He had arranged for the money and weapons used in the shootout and trained the juveniles who carried out the crime.
"On June 20, we got a tip-off that Jamal would come to his house to meet his sick mother. A team led by ACP Seelampur Anand Mishra then laid a trap for him. Jamal was spotted leaving his house late in the night and as soon as he reached Brahampuri pulia he was nabbed," said DCP northeast, Ajit Kumar Singla.
Jamal had been absconding since 2013. "Jamal's father Iqbal Ghazi and two brothers - Kamaluddin and Umar - are in judicial custody facing trial under MCOCA," Singla said.
Around 11.40am on December 23, 2015, Irfan alias Cheenu Pehelwan, who has 23 criminal cases against him, was produced before a metropolitan magistrate in court number 73. He was accompanied by head constable Ram Kumar Meena from the third battalion.
Four armed youths standing near the courtroom door suddenly opened fire at the witness box. Around 10-12 shots were fired as the judge, lawyers and public ran for cover. The four juveniles involved in the shootout were nabbed before they could escape.
