A man accused of assaulting his roommate, who later died, was arrested by the police on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as Basha alias Muhammed Yunis Khan (35) from Hyderabad. He stayed in a room here with four others from Nellore identified as Raghavan (38) Chinamastham (35) Sriramulu (35) and Periyamasthan (32). All of them were involved in some work with the railways department. It is learnt that the four others were using Basha’s mobile phone and it was lost. Agitated over the issue, he beat the four others, who were hospitalised.

Police said that Periyamasthan, who was discharged with the others, was later admitted in a hospital in Nellore, where he died.

A case against Basha that was initially registered under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code was altered to 302 (murder). While a search was launched for him, he could not be traced.

The police here then informed the Hyderabad police about the incident and to tip-off Coimbatore Police when the accused was spotted. It is learnt that a couple of days ago the accused had gone to his home when he was nabbed by the police there and was handed over to the Coimbatore police. Basha was produced before the court here and lodged in jail under judicial custody.
