Gujarat does a backflip on sports quota

Ahmedabad: The state government has decided to not to implement the sports quota in college admissions in arts, science and commerce faculties and even professional courses. The decision to withdraw the sport quota was taken after the state's legal department opined against the same.
Nanu Vanani, minister of state for sports, youth and cultural activities, said, "After going through the notification for making sports quota mandatory in college admissions and government jobs, the legal department raised technical objections opining it would lead to court cases in the future.After reviewing the opinion, the department has decided to withdraw the sports quota. The government is working out ways to implement the same, but from next academic session beginning in 2017."
It is worth recalling that the sports quota was announced during the budget session of the state assembly.
Officials involved with the admissions for arts, commerce and science faculty said that based on the government resolution, they had received 50-odd applications for admission under the sports quota.
"We did not have any clarification over the same, and hence we had asked these students to get a certificate from from the Sports Authority of Gujarat. As the students applied for the certificate, the SAG informed the GU authorities that they cannot issue such a certificate, and in the meantime the government decided to call off the quota," said an official in the admissions committee.
