Vellore mayor presents surplus budget

The mayor said despite regular water supply, still the corporation had to receive Rs 8 crore as water tax.

VELLORE: The Vellore corporation’s budget for the year 2016-17 has shown surplus revenue of Rs 1826.99 lakh, with total revenue of Rs 1,01,997.85 lakh.
Presenting the budget at a meeting of the Vellore corporation here, mayor P. Karthiyayini said that there had been total revenue of Rs 1,01,997.85 Lakh out of which Rs 1,01,170 lakh was shown as expenditure, leaving a surplus of Rs 1826.99 Lakh for the year 2016-17.

She added that there had been a total of 11per cent increase in revenue income to the corporation. The mayor said despite regular water supply, still the corporation had to receive Rs 8 crore as water tax and so far the corporation had received only Rs 40 lakh from the public. In spite of the dues, the corporation had been making out equitable distribution of water to all the residents.

At the meeting when Haniff, DMK councillor pointed out about roaming of pigs and deers in Seripedi and Thorapadi areas creating nuisance for the growth of vegetables and rice in some areas, the mayor said the corporation would take up the issue with the District Collector, as it had no power to capture or kill those animals. The corporation was entrusted to catch dogs, but had no power to kill them; instead they were sterilized, she explained.

For the conveniences of the general public, the corporation had introduced new software for the second time to file complaints and also to remit taxes through online system. She also said that the birth and death certificates are issued within 15 days from the date of registration and added it was important for every individual to come forward to register about the details.

The corporation mayor, before submitting for the budget, expressed happiness at the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa assuming office for the sixth time after the recent Assembly elections, and lauded the various new welfare measures announced by the Chief Minister.

The Taxation committee president Ilavarasi Ezhumalai, said that when Ms Jayalalithaa assumed office as Chief Minister in 2011, the Vellore corporation budget was only Rs 100 crore. Now it has increased to '1000 crore, adding, this was a welcome sign of the growth of the district under the able administration of the Chief Minister.
