Mumbai: Cook murders co-worker over poorly made tea

The accused, Mahendra Purohit, was caught at Andheri railway station after almost a day on the run.

A 19-year-old man was arrested by the police on Tuesday for allegedly murdering his colleague over poorly made tea.

The accused, Mahendra Purohit, was caught at Andheri railway station after almost a day on the run. Purohit and the deceased, Babu Bharti (38), worked as cooks at a granite shop. They also lived on the terrace of the one-floor building. The police said the duo had been squabbling since 4 am on Monday and things came to a head a few hours later.

“Bharti had made tea for both of them but Purohit did not like the taste and told him that. He also became angry that Bharti had left the remnants of the tea powder in the strainer and not thrown it,” said Inspector Balasaheb Salunke of Andheri police station.

The argument turned violent and Purohit hit Bharti in the stomach repeatedly with an iron rod. “Purohit then pushed Bharti, who fell to the ground through the space on the terrace fence,” Salunke said.
