Hassan Deputy Commissioner Umesh H. Kusugal has instructed officers to look for private land for purchase, in places where people of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes do not have burial grounds.

The DC gave this instruction during the committee district-level awareness meeting in Hassan recently.

Atrocities on Dalits

The State government has decided to provide land for burial for SC and ST people in villages where they do not have the space to bury their dead. “The government has ordered us to purchase private land, if required, to fulfil the need of these classes. The officers should look for suitable land wherever required and initiate the purchase process,” he said.

As many as 30 cases of atrocities on Dalits have been reported in Hassan district from January 1 to April 30 this year.

The Social Welfare Department has provided relief to all victims in these cases. The department is yet to provide relief in eight cases reported since May this year, said N.R. Purushottam, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department.

The DC said that relief amounts will be released to beneficiaries’ bank accounts. MLAs H.K. Kumaraswamy and K.M. Shivalinge Gowda attended the meeting.
