Now, free WiFi to come up at post offices in city

To begin with, the service will be offered at HPO, says top oficial

On the lines of free WiFi Internet made available at city’s Railway Station, the Postal department is also planning to roll out free Internet through WiFi connectivity at the post offices in the Vijayawada division. In the first phase, the wireless Internet services will be launched at the Head Post Office in One-town of city so that the customers who visit the post office for various purposes can use the Internet on their mobile devices.

Speaking to The Hindu on Thursday, Director of Postal Services, Vijayawada Region K. Somasundaram said that plans are afoot to roll out WiFi for the use of customers. “We are currently examining the cost, technology and other aspect. We are contacting the telecom providers for the same and it will be free WiFi. Hopefully by October this year it will be provided in the Head Post Office where hundreds of customers visit each day,” Mr. Somasundaram said. Later the service will be spread to other offices in the city, he added.

On the other initiatives, Mr. Somasundaram said that all the branches would have Rural Information and Communication Technology (RICT) which offers a range of services including financial services, disbursement of social security schemes and others for the rural population through Gramin Dak Sevaks. Also, through the hand-held electronic devices given to post masters they can provide banking, insurance and other operations at the customers’ door steps within no time, Mr. Sandesh Mahadevappa, Senior Superintendent, Vijayawada said. He said there are about 20, 000 Sukanya Samriddi Accounts in the region.
