Three persons, who were involved in abducting and assaulting of K. Arul, secretary of Namakkal Taluk Lorry Owners Association, were arrested by the police here on Thursday.
The arrested were K. Immanuvel (20) of Nallipalayam, K. Ranjith (22) and E. Balasubramanian (21) of R.P. Pudur. The police said that they were part of the 10-member gang who assaulted Arul and assaulted his wife and mother and abducted him on Monday. The gang confined him at a place and assaulted him. Later, they dropped him outside the District Government Headquarters Hospital. Arul suffered serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore.
Search is on to locate other members of the gang. The police are yet to obtain statement from Arul who is undergoing treatment. The reason behind the abduction is yet to be ascertained. Sources in the police said that a gang led by Pradeep, a mercenary, was hired by a lawyer to abduct the secretary.
In another incident, two special teams arrested three persons on the charges of abducting a woman. Based on tip off, the teams visited Attayampatty bus stop and found three accused waiting in the bus stop. The team arrested A. Fazil (22) and his wife Yasmin (22) of KK Nagar in Chinna Ammapalayam in Salem district and her 17-year-old brother. The police said that since Sharmila Banu was living alone, Akbar Ali planned to make money with the help of his former neighbours. Yasmin, a nurse, injected medicine and made Sharmila Banu unconscious and confined her at their house at K.K. Nagar. The police recovered jewellery, knife and cash Rs. 18,000. While the boy was lodged at Borstal School at Paramathi Velur, others were lodged at prison in Salem. A search is on for the driver.
