Majuli Island was Thursday cut off from the rest of world after authorities suspended boat services to the island because of the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger mark.
“We had to suspend plying of ferry boats and other vessels between Nimatighat and Majuli after the Brahmaputra crossed the danger level Thursday morning. While the water level receded slightly later in the day, boats are likely to ply on Friday,” Jorhat deputy commissioner Roshni Aparaji Korati told The Indian Express over telephone.

For the 1.53 lakh people of Majuli, said to be one of the largest inhabited river islands in the world, boats and ferries are the only means of transport to the mainland. A large number of people from the island travel to Jorhat daily for work, education and better healthcare.
Sonowal, who was elected from Majuli Assembly constituency, had Tuesday announced that his government would, besides addressing the island’s problems, launch a campaign to attract tourists and get Unesco’s World Heritage Site tag for Majuli.
