Bomb fears as town centre evacuated
FAMILIES have been evacuated and parts of Dunstable town centre in Bedfordshire closed off by police after a suspicious package was found.
The bomb squad is understood to have been scrambled to the scene just hours before polling stations are due to close as the referendum voting deadline looms.
Icknield Street, West Street and Princes Street have been evacuated and a police cordon put in place.
It is not known at this stage if the incident is linked to the referendum.
Bedfordshire Police told Express.co.uk that no-one was available to provide further details.
The police force later took to Twitter and Facebook to clarify the situation.
A police spokesman said on the force's Facebook page: “Roads in Dunstable were temporarily closed this evening while police investigated reports of a suspicious device.
“High Street North and West Street were closed while the item, which was found inside a property in West Street, was examined.
“Members of the Emergency Ordnance Disposal team attended and deemed the device non-suspicious and not dangerous.
“The roads have now re-opened”
