BUCHAREST, Romania – Romanian authorities say five people have died in a heatwave that has swept the country in recent days, with reports of others who have fallen into comas.
A spokesman for emergency services in the northeast county of Vaslui, Dan Ungureanu, said three men succumbed Thursday afternoon to the intense heat while they were working. One was a 74-year-old man who collapsed while working in a field in temperatures that reached 35 C (95 F).
In the northeastern city of Iasi, a spokesman for the ambulance service, Nicolai Pralea, said two men died there.
Forecasters say the high temperatures will continue until Saturday in some parts of Romania.
Authorities reported other cases of people being in comas due to the heat.
