Patna: In line with PM Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision, Union communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday announced creation of 100 Wi-Fi spots in Bihar in the next one year. “Of them, 50 Wi-Fi spots will be created in Patna. Creation of Wi-Fi spots in tourist and religious places such as Nalanda, Rajgir, Pawapuri and Vaishali will also be expedited,” the minister, who reviewed the functioning of BSNL’s Bihar circle here, said at a press meet on Thursday.
He expressed satisfaction over the 18.12% increase in the circle’s revenue in 2015-16. “The market share of BSNL has increased from 4.12% to 4.88% and about 9.37 lakh new customers have joined BSNL in Bihar in last financial year,” Prasad said.
The BSNL’s Bihar circle was on the top in the country in number of customers switching over from other service providers via Mobile Number Portability in last FY. “Altogether 2,10,431 customers moved over to BSNL from other companies in 2015-16. Our service must be better than others,” Prasad said.
To address the issue of call drops, the BSNL installed 1,112 new towers in last FY and targets installing 1,650 new telecom towers across the state in the next one year. “I have ordered installation of 160 2G and 3G towers each in Patna alone within a year. I have also told officials to travel on highways to check the network availability and make necessary improvements,” he said.
The minister asked BSNL officials to take complaints via social media and address them at the earliest. “As announced earlier too, 4G network will be coming to four cities in Bihar. I have told officials to regularly monitor the progress as a lot of ground is yet to be covered for the turnaround of the PSU in the state,” he said.
“Between February and April, more customers joined us than any other private operator in the country. Our operating profit is expected to be over Rs 2,000 crore for FY 2015-16 in the country,” he said.
BSNL-CMD Anupam Shrivastava and Bihar circle CGM Shiv Lal Singh were present on the occasion.
