1979: When the devil went down to Georgia

He was in a bind and he was way behind. No, it wasn't Jimmy Carter and his election campaign, it was Satan himself in The Charlie Daniels Band's The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

The song was a radio-staple throughout the summer of 1979, steadily rising from it's first appearance on June 23 to a peak of number three on September 15, where it was behind After the Love Has Gone by Earth, Wind and Fire and The Knack's My Sharona, which was on top of the chart.

The story song describes the devil, really needing to make up his quota of human souls — a real stickler for keeping to his goals, apparently — heads down to Georgia and makes a bet with a young fiddler named Johnny. Satan suggests a musical contest with a solid gold fiddle as his offering, while Johnny must put his soul on the line, winner take all. Before long, the participants rosin up their bows and get to sawing away.

Dad Rock hosts Jim Lenahan and Patrick Foster pause on this anniversary of the song entering the charts and wonder: Who was the real winner in this epic fiddle jam?
