Antoine Griezmann signs Atletico Madrid contract extension

Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann has signed a contract extension committing him to the Estadio Vicente Calderon until 2021, the club have announced.

France striker Griezmann had been linked with a big-money move away from Atletico this summer but he has now committed his future to the Rojiblancos.

An Atletico statement read: "Antoine Griezmann has renewed his contract with our club until June 30th, 2021.

"The French striker has therefore extended by one season his contractual relationship with Atletico Madrid."

The 25-year-old signed from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2014, shortly after then-La Liga champions Atletico had lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in Lisbon and main striker Diego Costa had left for Chelsea.

Since then he has scored 44 league goals for Diego Simeone's side, and also scored from the penalty spot in the shootout in last month's Champions League final, which Atletico once again lost to their bitter local rivals.

"On a personal level, I would like to improve my goal scoring, minutes played, matches played, assists... my goal is always to improve upon what I have done the season before," Griezmann told the club's official website. "On a team level, we would also like to improve upon last season.

"The most basic thing is to continue with the key players we have and with our coach. We have the good fortune that the club wants to continue to improve and be a top club and that allows us to continue to grow.

"I can only thank the fans for all the support they have always given to this team and ask them to continue to support us as they have done up to this point. As for me, I want to say that I will continue to give my all on the pitch to thank them for all the kindness they show me."

Griezmann has started two of France's three group matches at Euro 2016, scoring the first goal in the 2-0 win over Albania in the 89th minute to settle the nerves of the host nation.

Sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero added: "I think this is great news for all Atletico fans because we are talking about an excellent football player, one of the best at his position.

"He has already shown his incredible talent over the first two seasons and with a huge growth margin. He is a player who is well loved and valued by our coach and by his teammates and admired by the fans and I can assure you that today they are very happy with this news.

"The club has made a firm promise to retain key football players and Antoine is one of those, so we should congratulate him on this renewal."
