Lebogang Phiri not sure if Brondby will release him for Rio Olympics

Lebogang Phiri is currently negotiating with Danish side Brondby over an extension of his current contract and says the club’s decision over whether or not to release him for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will play a major part in those talks. The SA Under-23 star‚ who is with the national team in Namibia at the COSAFA Castle Cup‚ tells Times Media Digital that he is unsure whether the club will release him for Rio if he was selected for the final South African squad. The Olympics come at the worst possible time for a rebuilding Brondby‚ who have a number of young players in the team that are also likely to be selected for South Africa’s group opponents in Brazil‚ Denmark.Bafana thrash Swaziland 5-1 to advance to Cosafa Cup semisThey might have been assisted by a red card Swaziland earned in debatable circumstances. But once they shifted into top gear, there was no stopping Bafana Bafana from running their Cosafa Cup semifinal opponents off the field with a 5-1 thumping in Windhoek, Namibia, last night. The tournament will not only impact the early rounds of the UEFA Europa League‚ but also the start of the 2016/17 Danish league season.“In terms of the Olympics‚ it’s a big problem because the club are playing in the Europa League and the Danish league starts at the same time and we have a lot of young players in the squad‚” Phiri says.“A lot of young players should go to the Olympics‚ but if they let that happen then they dismantle the team.“It’s going to be in my contract negotiations [with Brondby]‚ whether I go to the Olympics or not. Obviously if it doesn’t work out [contract negotiations] and I get put up for sale‚ then I can to go. I can then participate and help the country‚ which is my biggest dream.”Phiri says he will hear Brondby out about a new deal‚ but already has eyes on a move to a bigger European league.“I have a year left‚ we are discussing about extending‚ I’ll give them the first chance. I owe them that because they groomed me to become the player that I am today.“But I also feel that as a player you have to have ambition and drive. And that if I get a chance to move abroad [out of Denmark] and it is a bigger league‚ then obviously I will look at that and we will work with the club as to how it goes.”Phiri scored for the national Under-23 side in their 5-1 COSAFA Castle Cup semifinal victory over Swaziland on Wednesday night. He is likely to start the final against Botswana on Saturday too and also confirmed that he will travel to Japan with the squad for their friendly game later this month. This despite Brondby starting their Europa League campaign on June 30. - TMG Digital..
