Tata Motors is getting ready to launch the Tata Hexa, an SUV with MPV characteristics, however, there are well-set players in the industry who have tested waters and understand the significance to offer an MPV in the market.

Tata Hexa has matured with its design philosophy, the Hexa looks sharp, butch and beefy are the right angles and not the rounded design we have seen. The Hexa has the SUV exterior with MPV characteristics.

The Renault Lodgy does look like a van, is boxy and big in places where it should not. This design is to keep the space inside the Lodgy big and good to carry 7-8 passengers.

Toyota has wowed people with the Innova Crysta with the premium touch to the people carrier, however, you can still see that it is boxy, and the large panels make it large and heavy.

As for the Honda BR-V, it will be the best-looking people carrier. The Honda wing design in the front fascia and the SUV stance takes the cake in this comparison.

Engine Specifications & Gearbox: Hexa vs Lodgy vs Innova Crysta vs BR-V

Tata Hexa will be powered by 2.2-litre Varicor diesel engine which is expected to punch out 154bhp and 400Nm of peak torque. This engine will be mated to 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Renault Lodgy is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is tuned in two states of 108bhp and 84bhp and torque of 200Nm and 245Nm respectively. Both the engines are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Toyota Innova Crysta comes with two type, 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engine, the 2.4-litre engine churns out 148bhp and 343Nm of torque. As for the 2.8-litre engine produces 172bhp and 360Nm of torque. The 2.2-litre engine is mated to 5-speed manual gearbox, and the 2.8-litre engine is mated to 6-speed automatic.

Honda BR-V comes with petrol and diesel mill which is powered by 1.5-litre capacity. The petrol unit churns out 117bhp and 145Nm of torque, which is mated to 5-speed manual gearbox and a CVT automatic gearbox. The diesel unit produces 99bhp and 200Nm of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Tata Hexa will feature the Harman sourced 5-touchscreen infotainment system, 10 speaker JBL audio system, six airbags, ambient lighting and more.

As for the Renault Lodgy, boasts of cruise control, MediaNav with the 7-inch infotainment system, dual airbags and more.

Toyota Innova Crysta sets the benchmark in features like 21 bottle storage spaces, digital auto AC, chilled glove box, hill start assist, auto shut tailgate to name a few of the features.

The Honda BR-V comes with standard dual airbags across variants, keyless entry, auto AC, however, it misses out on touchscreen infotainment system and navigation system.

Tata Motors has equipped the Hexa with six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP (Electronic Stability Program).

Renault Lodgy comes with dual airbags only on the top variant, also, seen are the ABS with EBD and Brake Assist.

As for the Innova Crysta, Toyota has equipped it with three airbags and ABS as standard across variants. Also seen are the EBD and Brake Assist.

The Honda BR-V comes with dual airbags across variants with ABS with EBD.

Verdict: Hexa vs Lodgy vs Innova Crysta vs BR-V

Tata Hexa looks very good on papers and scores in most of the departments and is expected to give the other vehicles a run for their money. With Tata Motors picking up the pace in the design front, features and safety, its rivals will need to re-strategise its offering in this space of automobiles in India.

You cannot ignore the Toyota Innova Crysta, they have created a benchmark and have continued to innovate, this will be the premium vehicle in this segment and none have been able to challenge it.

Honda BR-V seems to a good value for money with standard features for the price you pay. Also, is that it can carry seven passengers comfortably compared to the mini MPVs like Maruti Ertiga or the Honda Mobilio.

Renault will have to rethink its Lodgy, a good start will be to provide better safety features as standard or up the game and get premium with SUV characteristics like Hill climb assist and premium interiors.
