Republic of Ireland's greatest results

Ireland will face England in the quarter-finals should they beat France and the Three Lions overcome Iceland. Here, Press Association Sport looks at five of their greatest previous results.

IRELAND 1-0 ENGLAND (EURO 1988)

It was the Republic's European Championship debut and they could not have marked it in better fashion. Ray Houghton scored a sixth-minute winner after some awful English defending allowed him to head past Peter Shilton. Chris Hughton, Mick McCarthy and Paul McGrath all played for Jack Charlton's side.

It was Ireland's second win over England, ending a wait of 39 years since they beat the Three Lions 2-0 in 1949.

IRELAND 1-1 SOVIET UNION (EURO 1988)

Following on from the memorable victory over England Ireland faced the then formidable former Soviet Union, who had already beaten Holland, in their next game. It was their first-ever major championship and they continued their momentum when Liverpool's Ronnie Whelan opened the scoring.

Oleg Protasov equalised after 75 minutes and then a narrow 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Holland meant Ireland failed to qualify from the group - although they did finish above winless England.

IRELAND 0-0 ROMANIA - IRELAND WIN 5-4 ON PENALTIES (WORLD CUP 1990)

A shoot-out victory saw Ireland qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals without winning a game in regulation time following three draws in the group stage. Charlton's side also set a new unbeaten record of 17 games after a 0-0 draw in Genoa.

Kevin Sheedy, Houghton, Andy Townsend and Tony Cascarino scored from the spot before Pat Bonner saved Daniel Timofte's penalty and David O'Leary sent Ireland into the last eight - where they lost 1-0 to Italy.

IRELAND 1-0 ITALY (WORLD CUP 1994)

One of the most iconic moments in Irish football history. Houghton was the hero again when he scored to upset Italy, eventual beaten finalists, in New York. The midfielder capitalised on sloppy Italian defending to loop a half volley over Gianluca Pagliuca from 25 yards to spark wild celebrations.

They lost their next game to Mexico 2-0 before a 0-0 draw with Norway saw them qualify for the second round, where they lost 2-0 to Holland in Orlando.

IRELAND 1-0 GERMANY (EURO 2016 QUALIFIER)

Martin O'Neill's men produced a stunning win over the world champions to leave qualification for France in their own hands. Shane Long's second-half goal secured a memorable victory after the striker latched onto Darren Randolph's long clearance.

Ireland still needed to rely on the play-offs to qualify and beat Bosnia over two legs to reach Euro 2016 thanks to two Jonathan Walters goals in the second game.
