American Mum Wakes From Operation To Find That She Has An Accent Like Mary Poppins

A spoonful of sugar might help the medicine to go down, but it turns out that an operation is capable of leaving you sounding like Mary Poppins.

That’s what happened to Lisa Alamia, after she woke from a routine procedure to find that her voice had transformed into the cut-glass English accent of Julie Andrews’ iconic nanny.

The mum of three, from Texas, had originally undergone surgery to correct an overbite - but her condition has left medics baffled.

She said: ‘People who don’t know me, they’re like, “Hey, where are you from?”’ Lisa said.

‘I’m from Rosenberg. They’re like, “Where is that?” I’m like, “Right here in Rosenberg”.

‘Oh, you’re from here? How do you talk like that? So that’s where the whole story comes up.’

The condition, known as foreign accent syndrome, has affected less than 100 people worldwide across the last 100 years - but Lisa’s kids are said to love their mum’s new accent.

Daughter Kylie said: ‘They are always asking me how my mom got that accent’

‘I thought she was joking with me but then she showed me that the doctor diagnosed her with foreign accent syndrome. Then I was like, "Oh, Lord.”’

Dr Toby Yalto, Lisa’s neurologist, has put her through a series of tests, but they are said to have failed - meaning that Lisa is now forced to get to grips with the new accent.

Perhaps a hearty rendition of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious might just be the answer?
