Manuel “Manny” Castro Garcia, 19: A sports fan, a prankster, recent grad

Manuel “Manny” Castro Garcia was an hijo, hermano and an amigo to many.

The 19-year-old “gentle giant” had a great sense of humor and was known to play pranks and make faces in family photos, according to the obituary posted by his family.

“He would always have us laughing and smiling,” they shared.

Attempts by The Republic to reach his family this week were unsuccessful.

Garcia was described as an inspiring man who worked hard every day for his family. He was a recent graduate of Maryvale High School and worked with his father, Margarito Castro, as a welder.

He was an avid fan of basketball and football, and was especially fond of the Arizona Cardinals, according to his obituary.

His family wrote that he was the type of person who would “love everyone” and one who was “always there when you needed someone.”

On social media, his family and friends have changed their profile photos to an image of a black ribbon. They’ve also shared photo of him with a set of wings in the sky.

"Manny was my cousin and good kid," Manuel Soto Jr. said via Facebook. "Never looked or asked for trouble. Always a person who simply cared and was concerned about his friends and family."

“He didn’t deserve to be taken from us the way they did,” his obituary said. “Words can’t explain the pain we feel. The memories we have of him are unforgettable. We truly miss him and love him.”

“Manny sigue vivo en nuestros corazones para siempre,” they wrote. “Manny lives on in our hearts.”
