While the recent opening of a Bhupen Khakhar retrospective at London’s Tate Museum was a high point for Indian art, Saffronart’s CEO Hugo Weihe felt the works of the contemporary artist could have been better showcased.

Speaking at a recent conference in Mumbai, Weihe said, “I was not impressed by the way it had been curated — the way it had been put together.

It had many of his great works, but they had not assembled it in an intelligent way. I think they didn’t give any context. That aspect was annoying to me.”

The retrospective received a scathing review in The Guardian by art critic Jonathan Jone. However, Weihe disagreed with Jone. He added that the five monthlong exhibition was disappointing and missed an opportunity, especially in the light of the appreciation that a retrospective of VS Gaitonde in Guggenheim Museum received.

Weihe said, “The event had an enormous impact internationally and on the pricing of Gaitonde’s works.” Similarly, the Nasreen Mohammadi retrospective, Weihe believes, was a superb show at The Met Breuer, New York. “We are seeing international validation, which changes things,” he said.
