No relief for Geelani, Malik, Shabir; others released in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jun 23 (UNI) Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammad Yaseen Malik and its Vice-Chairman Showkat Ahmad Bakshi remained detained in Central Jail, Srinagar. There was also no relief for chairman of hardline Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and General Secretary of the amalgam Shabir Ahmad Shah, who too remained under house arrest. However, dozens of hardline HC leaders and activists detained for the past few days in different police stations, particularly in Anantnag, have been released. They were arrested to prevent any anti-poll campaign in Anantnag, where polling was held yesterday in the constituency, from where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is among the eight candidates seeking mandate to enter the Legislative Assembly. A spokesman of the JKLF said Mr Malik, who was arrested at Batmaloo on June 19, when he was going to meet Mr Geelani, remained lodged in Central Jail, Srinagar, where Bakshi has already been detained. A spokesman of the hardline HC Aiyaz Akbar said chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house arrest. He said security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside his Hyderpora residence, since he returned from New Delhi last month. He said Shabir Shah, General Secretary of the HC, also remained under house arrest since last month. However, dozens of HC leaders and activists, who were detained in different police stations for the past few days, have been released last night. UNI BAS ASM CJ RJ 1218
