BOSTON -- Red Sox third baseman Travis Shaw left Wednesday night's 8-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox after the third inning due to a right shin contusion.
Shaw, who fouled a ball off the right ankle area Tuesday night, singled in his only at-bat.
He also booted a slow roller at third base that led to Chicago's second run in the top of the third.
Deven Marrero replaced Shaw in the field to start the fourth and went 1-for-4.
It is the latest physical issue for the Red Sox, who have been hampered by a lean bench during their current 7-12 slide. Brock Holt, the starting left fielder earlier in the season and often the club's super utility player, is still at Triple-A Pawtucket working his way back from a concussion.
Holt was off Wednesday but is scheduled to play seven innings Thursday and a full game Friday. Manager John Farrell said Wednesday that Holt was still experiencing some symptoms of the concussion.
Catcher Ryan Hanigan (neck) could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Thursday, Farrell said. Catcher and converted left fielder Blake Swihart remains in a walking boot after suffering a severe ankle sprain but he will be examined soon. Utility man Josh Rutledge (knee) is also on the 15-day disabled list.
Shaw has broken out of a recent slump by going 9-for-25 on the current homestand but hasn't homered since May 28.
