The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to conduct a research on the party’s historic struggle for the Arabic language that took place on the 17th day of Ramzan in 1980.

IUML national treasurer P.K. Kunhalikutty said that the struggle and the ensuing firing, in which three party youths were killed, had become an essential part of the history of the land.

He said the Arabic language struggle of 1980 had kindled a revolution in the education of Malabar.

Like other historical struggles, the Arabic language struggle too should be counted in history, he said.

Although it was criticized as communal, the Arabic language struggle opened up new vistas of language studies in the State. Mr. Kunhalikutty said that even Sanskrit language too benefited because of that.

Addressing a commemorative meeting organised by the municipal Muslim Youth League committee here on Wednesday, Mr. Kunhalikutty said that the struggle had helped bring in a great social change in the State.

Muslim Youth League president Sameer Kappur presided. IUML State general secretary K.P.A. Majeed, U.A. Latheef, former Education Minister Nalakath Soopy, Chandrika Editor C.P. Saidalavi, P. Ubaidulla, MLA, T.V. Ibrahim, MLA, Youth League leaders Noushad Mannisseri, P.M. Sadikali, K.M. Gafoor and Salim Kuruvambalam spoke.
