The Public Works Department has taken up work on clearing the Noolar channel which runs parallel to the Karaikal – Tirunallar road for 5 km. The channel has been choked with plastic waste, dumping of garbage, and thick growth of vegetation and bushes, including water hyacinth.

According to official sources, work is being executed to a length of about 3.5 km at present. As it involves a clearing of huge quantity of garbage and plastic waste, about 20 workers are involved for about eight hours daily. The thick growth of water hyacinth is cleared manually. The channel irrigates about 200 acres in Pachur and Dharmapuram and surrounding areas. The channel enters Karaikal from Tamil Nadu and crosses Tirunallar. As a large number of residential colonies have come up on the stretch, the problem caused by garbage was on the rise.
