Over 30 students from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other African countries met with a seven-member delegation, led by the Congolese Ambassador to India Mossi Nyamale Rosette, on Wednesday to discuss the problems they have been facing in the city.
International students have complained of being cheated by agents who enrolled them in colleges in Bengaluru. But the colleges allegedly confiscated their travel documents and did not issue them bonafide certificates citing non-payment of fees.
The delegation discussed these problems with city police commissioner N.S Megharik, and other senior police officials. The students have alleged that the agent who got them admission to these colleges had taken fees ranging from $ 2,000 to $ 3,000 but did not pay that amount to the colleges.
The college managements, after providing accommodation and conducting classes initially, began to demand the fee and even confiscated the students’ travel documents, including passports, and refused to give domicile certificates.
Due to this the students have been termed by the police as overstaying. The police expressed helplessness to intervene regarding the college issue, citing jurisdictional problem, but said they would send the students back home with the help of FRRO (Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office).
The police had also helped many students by allowing them to stay till they completed their exams.
