Smartphone arms race driving up PC DRAM prices

TOKYO -- Spot prices of DRAM chips for personal computers continue to climb as chipmakers focus on meeting skyrocketing demand for increasingly memory-hungry smartphones.

The price of 4-gigabit DDR3 DRAM, a benchmark for PC memory, is up 6% over the past month to around $1.74 per module, even rising above $2 in some cases.
