Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is being sued for more than $100,000 for damage to a rental home, according to court documents obtained by the Dallas Morning News.
State Senator Royce B. West alleges that Bryant, who spent most of 2015 injured, caused so much damage to a 6,400 sq-foot rental home in DeSoto, Texas that it required a total of $61,546.77 in repairs.
According to the court documents, Bryant terminated his lease with West back in January and did not send anyone to represent him at the final walkthrough.
What West found when he went to check out the house was allegedly not very pretty, according to court papers:
Under the lease, Mr. Bryant undertook to return the property to Mr. West in the same condition in which he received it, excepting normal wear and tear. When Mr. Bryant returned the property to Mr. West in February 2016, however, Mr. West found it in a state of serious disrepair: littered with trash and feces, missing blinds and shutters, with cracked windows and blackened carpeting.
More specifically:
The walkthrough revealed irreparable damage to carpeting, flooring, windows, shutters and blinds; the presence of animal feces, trash, debris, and personal property inside the residence; and distinct and pervasive odors throughout.
West alleges he contacted Bryant in April 2016 and got no response, then contacted him again in May of 2016 and received a letter from an attorney on Bryant's behalf claiming Bryant would sue West if he asked for damages.
West also alleges he's been unable to rent the property since February of 2016 because of the damage caused to the home.
Back in 2014, with Bryant and the Cowboys negotiating a new contract, it was reported the police came to Bryant's house six times.
Cowboys employees told the Morning News at the time "they were concerned about Bryant's living arrangements" and believed "up to 10 people were living at the home."
The attorneys for West are asking for more than $100,000 but not more than $200,000 as a result of the damage done to the property.
West is seeking in the lawsuit to be reimbursed for any direct damages done to the house (costs to repair the home), any lost rent and/or expenses (utilities while it's being rented), attorney's fees and pre- and post-judgment interest at the highest allowed rate by the law.
