NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old man died after he came under a crane on Tilak Marg near ITO around 8pm on Tuesday.
Police said that the crane was being used for laying CNG pipelines and the man was assisting the crane driver when he accidentally came under it.
The deceased has been identified as Vipin Kumar, who belonged to Bihar and had come to Delhi to earn his living.
According to senior police officers, the accident took place when Kumar was working along with a colleague, on a contractual basis, for a company at a site where CNG pipelines were being laid.
“The crane was being used to lift heavy metal pipes. Kumar was walking on its left side and assisting the driver when his left foot got entangled with a rope and he fell. He was unable to move and was run over by the crane. He was immediately dragged out and rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead,” said a senior police officer.
The driver, hired by the same company, was held by the locals and handed over to the police. A case of causing death by negligence has been registered at Tilak Marg police station, police said.
“The body has been sent for postmortem and Kumar’s family has been informed about the matter. The body will be handed over once they arrive in Delhi. He used to live in Delhi with other employees. The matter is being investigated and the company who had hired the driver is also being questioned to check if they had required permits,” police said.
