The Brookline Police Department is giving away free ice cream all summer to responsible children

Getting a citation from a police officer rarely brings a smile to your face. This summer, the Brookline Police Department is hoping to change that.

The Department announced on their Facebook page that they would be issuing “conehead citations” to children 13 and under, who exhibit “safe and responsible behavior” like wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle. Kids who receive a citation are entitled to a free ice cream from J.P. Licks or Emack and Bolio’s.

The “Officer Katie” in the photo, BPD Officer Katherine McCabe, said that the aim of the initiative is twofold. “The goal is not only to encourage safe and responsible behaviors with the youth in town, but to also build relationships with the youth and officers,” McCabe said.

According to McCabe, though the department has done similar fun outreach programs in the past, this is only the second year the BPD is giving away ice cream tickets.

So if you’re having trouble convincing your child to wear a helmet, or just want to remind your kids to be upstanding citizens, the Brookline Police Department is here to help—one free scoop at a time.
