The head of the national skating federation was tapped as the vice president for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Wednesday.

Kim Jae-youl, currently president of the Korea Skating Union (KSU), was nominated as vice president for international affairs of the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) during its executive board meeting.

His nomination must be approved at the POCOG's general congress at a later date, though it's considered a formality.

Kim, 47, has been the KSI chief since 2011. Kim and other heads of national winter sports governing bodies had previously served as part-time vice presidents for the POCOG. Once he's formally approved, Kim will assume full-time responsibilities for the country's first Winter Olympics.

In the POCOG's hierarchy, Kim will rank below Secretary-General Yeo Hyung-koo.

Kim brings a wealth of sports administration experience to the table. He was the chief South Korean delegate to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, and was recently named to the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission on the 2022 Beijing Winter Games.

Kim is also running for a seat on the International Skating Union's executive committee this week in Croatia. If he is elected to the ISU position, he won't be allowed double as the KSU chief. (Yonhap)
