A 14-year-old class 9 student died after being knocked down by a train near Vastrapur on Tuesday around 9 am. The incident happened as the boy, carrying his bicycle and listening to music through earphones, was crossing the railway track from the wrong side. According to eye witnesses, spotting the boy on the tracks, the train's driver honked frantically and people nearby kept shouting to alert the boy.

However, with the earphones plugged in, he failed to listen and was knocked by the train. M Division Traffic Police said, "We have registered a case of accidental death of Shivam Urvishbhai Patel, a resident of Trishla Park Society in Vejalpur. On Tuesday around 7 am, he had had gone to attend tuition classes at Titanium City Centre in Satellite and was returning home around 9 am when the incident happened. The train he was knocked down by was coming from Botad and going towards Gandhigram Railway Station.
He died on the spot. Besides, instead of crossing the track from the railway gate, Shivam was crossing it from another opening. Shivam is survived by his parents, grandparents and an elder brother." Kinjal Mehta, 25, who stays in Sagar Samrat Apartment close to the spot where Shivam met with the accident, said, "Every day, more than 100 youths like Shivam cross the railway track from wrong sides or openings.
While many have narrow escapes, other don't get as lucky. There are three railway crossings in and near Vastrapur, but most people don't follow the safety rules and instead use some other way." Munna Thakur, 35, a daily labourer who was an eyewitness of the incident, said, "The first mistake that Shivam did was to listen to music while crossing the railway track. The second mistake he did was to take a wrong route instead of taking the marked route. After he was knocked down, we took out his ID card and informed his parents."
