The Azad Maidan police on Tuesday made three arrests in the Rs 352-crore road scam, a day after it took into custody five sub-contractors in connection with the case.

The arrested men are sub-contractors who were found to have signed on documents related to the financing of road repairs and construction.

The police have identified them as Dattatraya Sudan Dhas, 26, Ashish Ramnath Jaiswal, 27 and Rishikesh Gajanan Shinde, 23.

The case pertains to a BMC inquiry report in April which found irregularities in the laying of 34 roads across the city. The malpractice resulted in the civic body suffering a loss of Rs 353 crore.

Ever since it began a probe into the BMC complaint, the Azad Maidan police have so far arrested 22 people. It had arrested 14 people, including 10 auditors, last week.

Manoj Kumar Sharma, deputy commissioner of police, zone I, confirmed the arrests. He said the three sub-contractors arrested on Tuesday have been remanded in police custody till June 24.

According to the police, the accused had allegedly signed submissions stating that the roads were repaired and reconstructed as promised to the BMC. But when the civic authority inspected the claim, it was found to be false.

While the police probe in on, the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC has come under criticism from opposition Congress for scaling down the scam figure from Rs 352 crore to “Rs 14 crore”.

The Congress has termed the move a“double game” by the civic body.
